I simply love seeing others succeed, whether it’s educating clients, exploring customized solutions, or empowering people to help their family and move their communities forward. My passion has always been for helping people, and I truly enjoy advising my clients and, together, achieving their personal definition of success.

As both a primary care physician and wealth advisor at TCI, helping people and a focus on the true measures of success have always been at the heart of everything I do. And blending health, wealth, and happiness has always been of paramount importance to me.

This intersection of these principles and an uncompromising commitment to the purity of “honoring the process” to determine an outcome is why I eagerly transitioned to financial planning two decades ago and no longer practice medicine.

Now I specialize in helping other doctors and senior level executives build and maintain their wealth, independent from their businesses, by providing the same professional quality of financial advice to my clients today as I did for my patients back when I was a physician.

Our investment philosophy at TCI is rooted in the belief that success in life is as much about emotional contentment, personal fulfillment and overall well-being as it is about reaching financial goals. For me personally, success includes staying active by cycling, hiking, or horseback riding, supporting our local community, still coaching youth sports or advocating for children’s health-care, and spending time with my wife and five daughters (and their families) whenever I can, whether it’s planning our next adventure, traveling the world together, or trying new food. That is my definition of success and what motivates me every day at home and at TCI.

What are your favorite conversations you have with clients?

My favorite and often most meaningful client questions come in the form of “I know this isn’t related to finance but…”. That is my real passion for financial planning. Some of wealth management is about the numbers, but so much more is at the intersection of peace of mind and well-being. I want my clients to be able to come to me with anything that is on their mind that they need a thought partner for.

What are three fun facts about you?

  1. I am a fourth generation Arizonan. My great grandfather was a Maricopa County Sheriff way back in 1902.
  2. I am an avid reader but one of my favorite books is ‘Being Mortal” Medicine and What Matters in the End’ by Atul Gawande which focuses on how medicine can not only improve life but also the process of its ending.
  3. I am the TCI in-house medical advisor and parenting guru.
pets

Do you have any pets?

Oh yes, we are definitely animal lovers! In fact, we have so many pets that I’ve lost count. Our property sits on a few acres, so we are able to have lots of dogs, cats, chickens, ducks, turtles, and more! Though our house can feel like a zoo sometimes – crazy and chaotic – I wouldn’t change it for anything, our pets are part of the family.

Spend some time figuring out what you want your retirement to be like. You spent ample time planning out the path to being a physician, retirement planning should be no different. Even if retirement is a moving target, having goals in mind can keep you focused on achieving your long-term dreams.

John's financial tips

Start funding a Roth IRA as soon as possible. While you don’t get an upfront tax break, your contributions and earnings grow tax-free. And if you’re of the retirement age, ensure that both your kids and your grandkids do it too! Quite simply, it’s one of the smartest money moves a young person can make.
